The successful Vice Chancellor of Research candidate will be a visionary leader and person of integrity who will promote and advance the UAMS mission, while fostering innovation and excellence in research.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral degree, along with academic credentials and previous experience that merit a tenured appointment at the rank of professor in an academic unit of a university
  • Proven track record of substantive research funding, with recognition as a scholar
  • Strong experience in directing the research activities of a major institute, center, and/or health sciences university
  • Comfortable integrating big data, statewide resources, and emerging technologies into a traditional academic structure
  • Experience with technology transfer or translating intellectual property to businesses
  • Demonstrated history of effecting change

Position Specific Competencies

  • Experience working with major federal, industry and foundation funding agencies
  • Understanding of federal regulations and agency guidelines for sponsored research from at least one of the following: NSF, US DOE, DOD, NIH, NASA, NEH
  • Experience working with various external organizations, potentially at the local, state, federal and international levels
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory compliance oversight at the state and federal levels, including understanding of compliance regulations involving export controls, conflict of interest, human and animal subjects
  • Track record of advancing diversity in all its permutations; ensures an inclusive environment for students, faculty and staff and encourages and supports diversity of opportunity and promotion for all
  • Record of public/private partnership development that advanced the research mission or goals of a unit/college
  • Ability to lead and supervise at least 25 FTE, empowering and developing staff to actively engage and innovate across organizational boundaries
  • Knowledge of trends and issues across all aspects of research administration
