UAMS Health, the patient care umbrella of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), is a statewide health system that encompasses UAMS Medical Center, a 535-bed hospital and outpatient clinics on the central campus near Interstate-630 in midtown Little Rock, along with regional centers across the state, other clinics in central Arkansas, and clinics operated in partnership with other providers.
An adult Level 1 Trauma Center, the state’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center and the state’s only solid organ, bone marrow and stem cell transplant programs, UAMS Health is also well-known for its women’s health and neonatal care, its orthopaedic and sports medicine program and cancer treatment. UAMS Health cares for more than 600,000 patients a year, including 25,700 hospital patients, 62,000 Emergency department visits and 512,000 outpatient visits in fiscal year 2024. Patient care revenue was budgeted at nearly $1.5 billion in fiscal 2025.
In November 2024, UAMS Medical Center was awarded the highest international recognition for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), achieving designation as a Magnet® hospital. Approximately 615 hospitals in the United States, representing less than 10% of U.S. health care organizations, have earned Magnet® designation. UAMS is now one of just five hospitals in Arkansas to hold this distinction.
One of the fastest growing programs within UAMS Health is solid organ transplant, which more than doubled in transplant volume between 2018 and 2023. The program is growing because of its comprehensive care approach, innovative transplantation strategies, and robust support systems. Patients requiring transplant services, or those who are potential candidates, often face complex health challenges that standard hospitals are not equipped to manage effectively, but UAMS offers a full range of expertise and highly skilled care teams trained to care for the multi-faceted health issues transplant patients frequently encounter.
In 2024, the UAMS Kidney Transplant Program was ranked first in nation for survivability and the Liver Transplant Program was ranked first in the nation for survival while on a waiting list.
UAMS is well-known for our world-class care of multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. The UAMS Myeloma Center is an international leader in the treatment and study of multiple myeloma and related diseases. Our novel “total therapy” approach is designed to attack myeloma from all fronts and reduce relapse and residual disease and has been at the core of our successful outcomes since 1989. Median survival rates and length of remission have increased dramatically since this program began. Our Total Treatment approach defines each patient’s disease characteristics and designs precision treatments that target the disease while sparing normal cells and minimizing side effects. A world leader in multiple myeloma research, our Myeloma Center team is working to incorporate novel treatment approaches to push beyond past successes and further improve patient outcomes.
Other outstanding care areas include our ear nose and throat (ENT) department, which has been ranked among the top 50 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Our ENT physicians are consistently ranked among the nation’s best in Best Doctors in America. Patients from every state in the nation and over 30 countries have come to UAMS Health for treatment of diseases and disorders that affect the ears, upper respiratory and upper alimentary systems, and related structures of the head and neck.
