The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences —Arkansas’ only health sciences university. Founded in 1879 by eight physicians, UAMS has grown into a statewide health system, leading the way in health care, education, and research and dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Arkansans.
As the state’s largest public employer, UAMS employs over 12,000 individuals. Together with our clinical affiliates Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, we generate several billion dollars of annual economic impact that benefits communities statewide.
With over 3,400 students and nearly 2,200 faculty members, UAMS is training the next generation of health care professionals. UAMS supports over 900 medical residents and fellows, ensuring the state has highly trained specialists.
The UAMS Northwest Regional Campus, established in 2007, serves as an extension of our medical education, research, and clinical mission. The campus is home to over 300 students across various disciplines. Additionally, there are over 200 residents training in various specialties.
UAMS Northwest is also the site of Arkansas’s first three-year medical degree program, designed to fast-track students into primary care roles, meeting the region’s health care needs more quickly.
The Northwest campus is one of nine regional campuses, which generate over 600 jobs and contribute to the state’s economy. In fiscal year 2024, our Family Medical Centers at these regional campuses recorded over 135,000 outpatient visits, ensuring that quality health care is accessible to Arkansans wherever they live.
Our research initiatives in Northwest Arkansas have secured over 70 million dollars in grant funding, supporting more than 75 projects aimed at reducing health disparities statewide. The Institute for Community Health Innovation leads these efforts, focusing on family wellness, nutrition, and diabetes prevention.
Innovative programs like our mobile health units and the expansion of community health workers demonstrate our statewide commitment to meeting Arkansans where they are, ensuring access to essential services in even the most remote areas of the state.
The UAMS Institute for Digital Health & Innovation connects 63 rural hospitals through 30 plus digital health programs, providing access to top specialists for all Arkansans. Our high-risk pregnancy program offers remote consultations at 28 sites, ensuring expectant mothers receive essential care statewide.
At UAMS Health, we provide world-class care, from life-saving surgeries to routine checkups and everything in between. As Arkansas’ only adult Level 1 Trauma Center, we are fully equipped and staffed to handle the most critical and complex medical emergencies, providing advanced life-saving care 24/7 with a highly specialized team of trauma surgeons, emergency physicians, and support staff.
UAMS is also the only hospital in Arkansas that offers adult kidney, liver and pancreas transplants, providing life-saving care with advanced technology and a dedicated team. As the state’s leader in transplant services, we’re committed to giving patients a second chance at life.
Exemplifying excellence in nursing, UAMS has achieved the prestigious Magnet designation, reflecting our dedication to superior patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice.
At UAMS Health, we take pride in being the Official Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Provider for many University of Arkansas teams. From the practice field to game day, our expert physicians, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists are there—helping athletes stay strong, recover faster, and perform at their very best.
The UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is working toward NCI designation, expanding access to groundbreaking clinical trials and discoveries that will shape the future of cancer care.
Our commitment to innovation is evident in Arkansas’ first Proton Therapy Center, offering the world’s most advanced radiation therapy. The Proton Center of Arkansas is a collaboration of UAMS Health, Arkansas Children’s, Baptist Health, and Proton International.
The Myeloma Center at UAMS has treated nearly 17,000 patients globally and leads in stem cell transplants for multiple myeloma.
UAMS researchers are also at the forefront of medical discovery, bringing in over 233 million dollars in research funding and ranking in the top 14 percent of U.S. institutions for federal research grants. More than 3,600 research articles were published by UAMS-affiliated authors in 2024.
